Pediatric NAFLD: lessons from the gut

Over the last decade numerous studies have focused on characterizing the human microbiome; particular attention has been paid to understanding the complex interplay between gut, its microbiota and the liver (the so called “gut- liver axis”). The disruption of the gut-liver axis is involved in the development of several metabolic alterations such as obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (1).
