Liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma: are international guidelines possible?

Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an aggressive malignancy that arises in chronic liver disease. It is currently responsible for over 695,000 deaths internationally every year and its incidence continues to rise as liver cirrhosis and its complications persist as major health problems worldwide (1,2).
